Here are several different kinds of barns one might see along the roadside in the central Virginia region. These barns display a combination of German, Scotch/Irish and English influences. Generally, the barn and dominant technique of wood construction rose out of the German tradition. The stone masonry and form was often based on English or Scotch/Irish design. The unique mixture of variant ethnic styles displayed in these barns is an intrinsic aspect of the American heritage.
